What engine is this, and where did it come from? And why is the answer horrifying? (
EDIT: a whole bunch of you at once got it - Mickey Thompson Twin Tempest)
The Twin Tempest engine was built by Mickey Thompson from a cut-down Pontiac 195, which itself was cut down by Pontiac’s engineers from a V8. The end result is, as you can see, a slant-two with a V8 bellhousing pattern...
Mickey also ran a supercharged Tempest 4, as well as two other Tempest-powered cars at the same series. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (photos from there).

on the engine as it is

It’s clearly a gas powered chainsaw engine V8 5.0L

Is that a Scat?

No idea, only that it’s made of shades of grey. It might run better if they added some color to it.

It’s American.

I’m seeing tubular frame rails. I’m guessing it’s from a slingshot dragster based on assumed age of the photo.

That is correct. The specifics of it are pretty weird, though.

It’s appears to be a slant 2 in a dragster frame and must have been loud as hell with those trumpets for the exhaust. Is this a Bonneville car? I see magneto. That's a Pontiac motor isn't it? It has a supercharger on the other side right? God I think I saw that engine in a Hot Rod article or something.

Here’s a picture from when it was out of the car getting colorized:

Sort of, except the exact opposite.

1.6L supercharged twin with trumpet exhaust loud, you say. Yes, Pontiac, yes, supercharged.
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:18 |

Why did they make the block out of Pla-doh? Why are there trumpets for the exhaust?
And, only 2 cylinders?
Is this a SAAB engine?
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:19 |

It’s an American engine, funny enough. It came from the factory with four cylinders, though.

An American V4? Or is it a flat-4? I’ve never heard of anything like that.
Maybe you could just fill us in?
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:25 |

It’s half of a Pontiac 4, which was just half of a Pontiac V8. I’ve got some pics of a supercharged I4 from a local racing museum somewhere.

Mickey Thompson built it.

Looking forward to seeing the result.

Yep. I’ll post a bigger picture with post update.

Is that the Frankenstein Mickey Thompson Twin Tempest doohickey ?
Which was half of the 196(?) Inline 4 in the Tempest, which in turn was half the Pontiac 389 (?) V8?
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:27 |

Mother of god, I haven’t seen that in a while. Mickey Thompson really was a mad genius.

I don't know what's horrifying about the answer though.

I seem to recall that Mickey Thompson was somehow involved .
The early 60s were just _weird_ in GM Land.

800cc per cylinder is near-Offenhauser levels of big cylinder, and without the extra balance from having four cylinders. Under supercharging and high revs, and you have something which vibrates enough to shame the gods.
Also the part about cutting a V8 in half twice, that at least sounds a bit fucked up.

Actually, just remembered, the shop attached to the “museum” has the rights to produce the SD4.

Seriously, what is the horrifying part?
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:43 |

“Please ignore that the distributor is the size of a can of corn but only serving two cylinders. Also that there is a suction plate on springs on the intake. Also that the valve cover is held on with only two bolts because we didn’t feel like drilling more, and that this is a 1.6 liter slant twin.”
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:46 |

The aspect where it’s a very odd kludge and probably the only time an eight cylinder was turned into a two, however professionally. And that its cylinder displacement is
tempting fate on running evenly, a lot. And that the engine block was sawed in half. A couple of little things adding up.
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:48 |

The spring cover would allow for overpressure from the supercharger to release, and then re-seat when boost dropped . Actually quite a clever wastegate.

I hadn’t looked at the full list of comments. Saw the link with the answer.
I bet that sounds like the gates of Hell have opened.
![]() 08/15/2018 at 11:49 |

Damn, I just kinda assumed that there was another bank of cylinders on the other side.
Half of half an engine - wild!

Lol I read all that and thought “god damn, Mickey was a clever man." Never thought about the death defying aspect of it.

Lol sorry about not seeing this reply first and thank you for replying to it twice.

1960s paint pens gave off a lot of toluene vapor okay

Pontiac : “I SAWED THIS ENGINE IN HALF!”
Mickey Thompson: “Hold my beer.”
